The Polynesian settlers brought niu (coconut) on their long voyage to Hawai’i. It is known as a canoe plant - a crop essential for island living. coconut provided a source of food, water, and useful crafting material. Fruit was scarce in ancient Hawai‘i and coconut was one of only a handful available.
